Henry Fay West was born on March 24, 1922. He was the son of Fay Stephen West and Emily Ina Sanders West. Pfc Henry F. West was a combat medic in the 16th Infantry Regiment which stormed Omaha Beach on D-Day. In mid July 1944, during the height of the Battle of Normandy, the regiment and its attached medical battalion enjoyed a brief break, encamping near the ancient castle of Colombieres. On 19 July, together with four fellow medics (including Penobscot Indian tribesman Charles Shay), Henry was promoted to Private First Class. Less than two weeks later, on 1 August, the 22 year old heroic combat medic was killed and posthumously awarded a Bronze Star.
