Lansing Jessie Fonda was born on August 1, 1922 in Sanford, Lee County, North Carolina. He enlisted in the Army on Aug. 1, 1940, on his 18th birthday and had received C.M.T.C. training for three years previously. He was a member of the First Division and had taken part in the North African invasion in which his boat was torpedoed at Oran. He participated in three battles in the Tunisian campaign, those of the Kesserine Pass, Maturand and El Quetar. He was also in the Sicilian invasion in which he received a slight wound. He died from his wounds received in battle on July 29, 1944 in France at the age of 21 and is now buried in Woodlawn Cemetery, Syracuse, Onondaga County, New York, USA.
