Rupert Ward Thompson was born on January 16, 1914 in Wampee, Horry County, South Carolina. He was the son of Marcus Bear Thompson and Carrie Elizabeth Ward Thompson. Rupert served in the U.S. Army during World War II as a Technician Fifth Grade in the 7th Field Artillery Regiment, 1st Division. He died on August 2, 1944 at the age of 30 and is now buried in Forest Lawn Cemetery, Wampee, Horry County, South Carolina, USA. His name is commemorated on the First Infantry monument in Mons, Belgium and ranked as a Corporal.
