John Wesley “Joseph” Black was born on September 25, 1922 in Johnsonburg, Elk County, Pennsylvania. He entered active service with the U.S. Army on February 9, 1943 at Erie, Pennsylvania. John served as a Private in the Anti-Tank Company, 18th U.S. Infantry Regiment, 1st Infantry Division, United States Army during World War II. He served as a Bazooka Gunner. He died of wounds received in action in Belgium on December 23, 1944 and is now buried in Gettysburg National Cemetery, Gettysburg, Adams County, Pennsylvania, USA.
