Thomas David Stowe was born on September 12, 1963 in Albany, Albany County, New York. He was a 1981 graduate of Somerville High School, where he was a member of the band and the fencing team. Stowe enlisted in the Marine Corps in July 1981. Before being sent to Lebanon in May 1983, he was stationed at Camp Lejeune, Jacksonville, N.C. Stowe was wounded in September in Beirut when he was struck by fragments of a mortar shell in the neck. He returned to duty that month after being awarded a Purple Heart. Thomas was killed in the terrorist bombing of the United States Marine barracks. In the early morning hours of 23 Oct. 1983, a truck loaded with explosives crashed through the security perimeter of the USMC Barracks in Beirut, Lebanon. In the explosion that followed, 241 US Military personnel were killed and 80 serious wounded. He is now buried in the New Somerville Cemetery, Somerville, Somerset County, New Jersey, USA.
