When James Coachman Cullens was born on November 8, 1895, in New Orleans, Louisiana, his father, James, was 39 and his mother, Mable, was 27. He married Margaret Hope Simpson on May 2, 1919. They had two children during their marriage. James served in the US Army during World War I. He died on December 11, 1961, in Ille-et-Vilaine, France, at the age of 66, and was buried in the American Legion Mausoleum just west of Paris.
