John Wallace Courtney was born on March 26, 1907 in Athens County, Ohio. He was the son of Edward H. Courtney and Laura Anna Propst Courtney. John served in Company A, 134th Infantry Regiment, 35th Infantry Division as a Private during World War II. He died on September 21, 1944 at the age of 37 during the battle for liberation of Agincourt, France and is now buried in the Lorraine American Cemetery and Memorial, Saint-Avold, Departement de la Moselle, Lorraine, France.
