Thomas Richard Ankrim, aged 20, was born on January 29, 1924 in Lancaster, Lancaster County, Pennsylvania. He resided in Lancaster County, Pennsylvania prior to the war. Thomas served as a Second Lieutenant and Pilot, 25th Fighter Squadron, 51st Fighter Group, U.S. Army Air Force during World War II. He was declared "Missing in Action" on December 7, 1944 in China and is commemorated on the Walls of the Missing, Manila American Cemetery, Taguig City, Philippines. He also has a cenotaph located in New Chestnut Level Presbyterian Cemetery, Quarryville, Lancaster County, Pennsylvania, USA.

Thomas was one of over 2000 Americans who lost their lives defending China from their Japanese invaders from 1941-1945. He is also commemorated on the The Monument to the Aviation Martyrs in the War of Resistance Against Japan in Nanjing, China.
