Philip Eugene Burk was born on July 24, 1915 in Arco, Butte County, Idaho. He was the son of Philip Prosper Burk and Ruth Prudence Gilbert Burk. He served in the 1332nd Army Air Force as a Second Lieutenant and Co-pilot of an aircraft during World War II. Philip was killed in a plane crash in India on October 16, 1944 at the age of 29 and is now buried in the National Memorial Cemetery of the Pacific, Honolulu, Honolulu County, Hawaii, USA. He also has a cenotaph located in Orchard Mesa Cemetery, Grand Junction, Mesa County, Colorado, USA. Burk was one of over 2000 Americans who lost their lives defending China from their Japanese invaders from 1941-1945. He is commemorated on the The Monument to the Aviation Martyrs in the War of Resistance Against Japan in Nanjing, China.
