Robert E. Caldwell, aged 21, was born on September 3, 1922. He served in the US 22nd Bombardment Squadron, 341st Bombardment Group, Medium as a Second Lieutenant. On a low level combat mission to Vinh, French Indo China (now Vietnam), the B-25 Mitchell bomber in which 2nd Lt. Robert E. Caldwell was a Bombardier / Navigator, was shot down by enemy ground fire and crashed into a river. All aboard were lost. He is now buried in the Golden Gate National Cemetery, San Bruno, San Mateo County, California, USA. Robert was one of over 2000 Americans who lost their lives defending China from their Japanese invaders from 1941-1945. He is commemorated on the The Monument to the Aviation Martyrs in the War of Resistance Against Japan in Nanjing, China.
