Richard Union Ellerbe was born in 1921 in Polk County, Florida. He had a year of college, thus advanced to the rank of Technical Sergeant and Assistant Engineer of an aircraft in the US Army Air Corps during World War II. He was Killed in Action on a bombing mission on August 28, 1944 and the entire crew was buried together. He is now buried in the Jefferson Barracks National Cemetery, Lemay, St. Louis County, Missouri, USA. Richard was one of over 2000 Americans who lost their lives defending China from their Japanese invaders from 1941-1945. He is commemorated on the The Monument to the Aviation Martyrs in the War of Resistance Against Japan in Nanjing, China.
