Lewden M. Enslen was born on November 30, 1919. He was the son of Sanford Perry Enslen and Helen Ruth Sawyer Enslen. Lewden served in the US Air Corps as a Captain of an aircraft during World War II. He died on November 11, 1943 when his fighter plane crashed, shot down by 2 Japanese planes, near Huang Mei Dist. in China. He lived for 2 days but died from loss of blood. He is now buried in the Springfield National Cemetery, Springfield, Greene County, Missouri, USA.

Lewden was one of over 2000 Americans who lost their lives defending China from their Japanese invaders from 1941-1945. He is commemorated on the The Monument to the Aviation Martyrs in the War of Resistance Against Japan in Nanjing, China but his surname is inscribed as Lowden.
