Edmund Alois Gerstenkorn was born on March 4, 1922 in Redwing, Barton County, Kansas. He was the son of Andrew Gerstenkorn and Anna Katherine Hermann Gerstenkorn. He served in the US Air Corps as a Staff Sergeant and Gunner of an aircraft during World War II. Edmund died on August 24, 1943 at the age of 21 and is now buried in the Holy Family Cemetery, Odin, Barton County, Kansas, USA. He was one of over 2000 Americans who lost their lives defending China from their Japanese invaders from 1941-1945. He is commemorated on the The Monument to the Aviation Martyrs in the War of Resistance Against Japan in Nanjing, China.
