James H. Hanley was born on July 26, 1917. He was the son of Patrick J. Hanley and Bridget L. Hanley. He resided in Erie County, New York prior to the war. He enlisted in the Army on June 12, 1942 in Buffalo, New York. He was noted as being employed as a Office Clerk and also as Single, without dependents. James served as a Sergeant, 9th Combat Cargo Squadron, 3rd Combat Cargo Group, U.S. Army Air Force during World War II. James was "Killed In Action" during the war on March 20, 1945 at the age of 27 and is now buried in the Holy Cross Cemetery, Lackawanna, Erie County, New York, USA. He was one of over 2000 Americans who lost their lives defending China from their Japanese invaders from 1941-1945. He is commemorated on the The Monument to the Aviation Martyrs in the War of Resistance Against Japan in Nanjing, China.
