Derward Blake Harper was born on February 28, 1917. He was the son of James Madison Harper and Susie Norment McGee Harper. Derward served in the 14th US Army Air Forces as a Captain and Pilot of an aircraft during World War II. He was Killed in Action on January 26, 1944 at the age of 26 in China and is now buried in the Oakwood Cemetery, Raleigh, Wake County, North Carolina, USA. He was one of over 2000 Americans who lost their lives defending China from their Japanese invaders from 1941-1945. He is commemorated on the The Monument to the Aviation Martyrs in the War of Resistance Against Japan in Nanjing, China.
