Rufus T. Harwell was born in 1918. He was the son of James D. Harwell and Nellie D. Harwell. He served in the Station 5, India-China Wing, Air Transport Command as a Second Lieutenant and Co-Pilot during World War II. Rufus died on June 19, 1944 at the age of 25 and is now buried in the National Memorial Cemetery of the Pacific, Honolulu, Honolulu County, Hawaii, USA. He also has a cenotaph located in Friendship Baptist Church Cemetery, Danielsville, Madison County, Georgia.

Rufus was one of over 2000 Americans who lost their lives defending China from their Japanese invaders from 1941-1945. He is commemorated on the The Monument to the Aviation Martyrs in the War of Resistance Against Japan in Nanjing, China.
