William A. “Bill” McWhirk was born on December 1, 1923 in Placer County, California. He served in the 427th Night Fighter Squadron as a Staff Sergeant and Assistant Engineer of a B-25G aircraft during World War II. B-25G #41-30010 "Matilda" left 4 July 1945 from Chengkung, China on an operational mission to Dinjan, India, when it disappeared over "The Hump". Weather was reported to be generally good that day. Fifteen men were lost and the cause is unknown. His name is commemorated on the Walls of the Missing, Manila American Cemetery, Taguig City, Philippines.

Jack was one of over 2000 Americans who lost their lives defending China from their Japanese invaders from 1941-1945. He is also commemorated on the The Monument to the Aviation Martyrs in the War of Resistance Against Japan in Nanjing, China but death date is inscribed as 1945-07-04.
