Shot down 19 May 1967 on a reconnaissance mission over Hanoi after launching from the USS Kitty Hawk (CV-63). Ejected and captured. Died in captivity on 20 May 1967. Was promoted while in captivity as his death was not known until 1973. Body repatriated on 13 March 1974, and positively identified on 17 April 1974. He is buried in Arlington National Cemetery.
