William George Phillips was born on January 19, 1917. He served in the 26th Fighter Squadron, 51st Fighter Group as a First Lieutenant during World War II. He was declared "Missing in Action" on August 20, 1944 and is commemorated on the Walls of the Missing, Manila American Cemetery, Taguig City, Philippines. He also has a cenotaph located in Iowa Veterans Cemetery, Van Meter, Dallas County, Iowa and Keokuk National Cemetery, Keokuk, Lee County, Iowa. 1Lt Phillips was one of over 2000 Americans who lost their lives defending China from their Japanese invaders from 1941-1945. He is commemorated on the The Monument to the Aviation Martyrs in the War of Resistance Against Japan in Nanjing, China.
