Harry Willard Poppell, Jr. was born on May 22, 1919. He was the son of Harry and Ruby H. Poppell. He served in the US Air Corps as a Captain and Pilot of an aircraft during World War II. He died on February 11, 1944 at the age of 24 and is now buried in the Raleigh National Cemetery, Raleigh, Wake County, North Carolina, USA. Cpt Popell was one of over 2000 Americans who lost their lives defending China from their Japanese invaders from 1941-1945. He is commemorated on the The Monument to the Aviation Martyrs in the War of Resistance Against Japan in Nanjing, China and ranked as a First Lieutenant.
