Walter J. Schexnayder, Jr. was born on September 30, 1921 in Welcome, St. James Parish, Louisiana. He resided in St. James Parish, Louisiana prior to the war. He enlisted in the Army on August 7, 1942 in New Orleans, Louisiana. He was noted, at the time of his enlistment, as being employed as a Retail manager and also as Single, without dependents. Walter served as a Staff Sergeant on B-25D #41-30555, 11th Bomber Squadron, 341st Bomber Group, U.S. Army Air Force during World War II.

Walter was "Killed In Action" when his B-25 crashed in China during the war. He was originally interred in Mausoleum #2 Shanghai Cemetery, China and was later repatriated in the Marietta National Cemetery, Marietta, Cobb County, Georgia, USA on September 14, 1949 in a common grave with 1Lt Dykstra. Ssgt Schexnayder was one of over 2000 Americans who lost their lives defending China from their Japanese invaders from 1941-1945. He is commemorated on the The Monument to the Aviation Martyrs in the War of Resistance Against Japan in Nanjing, China.
