Rai Perry Sturges was born on December 13, 1919 in Oak Park, Cook County, Illinois. He served in the US Air Corps as a First Lieutenant and Co-Pilot of an aircraft during World War II. He died on June 16, 1944 at the age of 24 in China and is now buried in the Fort McPherson National Cemetery, Maxwell, Lincoln County, Nebraska in a common grave with his crew. 1Lt Stuges was one of over 2000 Americans who lost their lives defending China from their Japanese invaders from 1941-1945. He is commemorated on the The Monument to the Aviation Martyrs in the War of Resistance Against Japan in Nanjing, China but ranked as a Second Lieutenant.
