Robert Edward Atkinson was born on March 18, 1920 in Morgan County, West Virginia. He was the son of Robert William Atkinson and Estella Margaret Breig Atkinson. He served in the US Air Corps as a Captain during World War II. He died on March 29, 1943 at the age of 23 in Yunnan, China and is now buried in the Rosedale Cemetery, Martinsburg, Berkeley County, West Virginia, USA. CPT Atkinson was one of over 2000 Americans who lost their lives defending China from their Japanese invaders from 1941-1945. He is commemorated on the The Monument to the Aviation Martyrs in the War of Resistance Against Japan in Nanjing, China.
