Fred Clifford Hopkins was born on December 13, 1895 in Georgia. He was the son of Jasper Newton Hopkins and Sarah Malinda Tatum Hopkins. He enlisted in Cherokee County, Georgia in the US Army on May 29, 1918 and served with the 72nd Co 6 Repl Regt at Camp Gordon, Georgia. Fred departed Philadelphia, Pennsylvania on 27 July 1918 on the British steam merchant Agapenor and served overseas with Company "D", 163rd Infantry, 1st Division until his death in France. Fred died of disease on September 5, 1918 in France at the age of 22 and is now buried in the Mount Zion Baptist Church Cemetery, Hickory Flat, Cherokee County, Georgia, USA.
