Mathew Martin Gordon, Jr. was born on April 21, 1919 in Denver, Denver County, Colorado. He achieved ACE status while flying with the 75th Fighter Squadron, 23rd Fighter Group, 14th Air Force in China, prior to his service in India. He died in a plane crash in India on 10 Aug 1945. He was originally interred at Kalaikunda Cemetery (Kalaikunda Air Force Station)and was reinterred in National Memorial Cemetery of the Pacific (Honolulu, Hawaii) on 4 Feb 1949.

Major Gordon was one of over 2000 Americans who lost their lives defending China from their Japanese invaders from 1941-1945. He is commemorated on the The Monument to the Aviation Martyrs in the War of Resistance Against Japan in Nanjing, China.
