James D. Longanecker was born in Henrico County, Virginia. He enlisted in the Army in Richmond, Henrico County, Virginia on November 7, 1941. He served in the 13th Squadron, 1st Ferry Group as a First Lieutenant and Co-Pilot of an aircraft during World War II. He was declared "Missing in Action" on January 8, 1946 and is commemorated on the Walls of the Missing, Manila American Cemetery, Taguig City, Philippines.
1Lt Longanecker was one of over 2000 Americans who lost their lives defending China from their Japanese invaders from 1941-1945. He is also commemorated on the The Monument to the Aviation Martyrs in the War of Resistance Against Japan in Nanjing, China.
