Irvin Boyd Shaffer was born on May 27, 1915 in Sullivan County, Pennsylvania. He was the son of Raymond Martin Shaffer and Frederica Beatrice Armes Shaffer. He served in the 425th Bomber Squadron, 308th Bomber Group, Heavy as a Second Lieutenant during World War II. He was killed in the crash of B-24 42-73502 "Belle of the Brawl" on July 8, 1944 in China and is now buried in the East Forks Union Cemetery, Forksville, Sullivan County, Pennsylvania, USA. Second Lieutenant Shaffer was one of over 2000 Americans who lost their lives defending China from their Japanese invaders from 1941-1945. He is commemorated on the The Monument to the Aviation Martyrs in the War of Resistance Against Japan in Nanjing, China.
