Robert L. Smith was born on July 31, 1920. He served in the 375th Bomber Squadron, 308th Bomber Group, Heavy as a Sergeant and Gunner of an aircraft during World War II. He died on May 19, 1944 at the age of 23 and is now buried in the Rose Hill Cemetery, Marion, Williamson County, Illinois, USA. Sgt Smith was one of over 2000 Americans who lost their lives defending China from their Japanese invaders from 1941-1945. He is commemorated on the The Monument to the Aviation Martyrs in the War of Resistance Against Japan in Nanjing, China.
