Edwin C. "Mike" Elliott was born in 1920 in Kentucky. He enlisted directly into the Army Air Corps from Coles County, CP Grant, Illinois on 29 Oct. 1941. Mike had completed 2 years of high school and was still single at enlistment. S/Sgt Mike was with the 57th Bomb Wing HQ and was a passenger on a Courier ship B-25 # 42-53371 "Deathwind" on 10 May, 1944 en route to Ghisonaccia, when bad weather caused the pilot to fly off course and the planep crashed into the Mountains of Corsica, killing everyone aboard.

SSGT Elliott's remains were recovered in 1989 and identified in September 2005. He is interred at Arlington National Cemetery. SSGT Elliott's name is permanently inscribed on the Tablets of the Missing at the Florence American Cemetery and Memorial with a rosette is placed next to his name to mark that the he now rests in the known gravesite. He also has cenotaphs located in Dodge Grove Cemetery, Mattoon, Coles County, Illinois and Rest Haven Memorial Gardens, Lafayette Township, Coles County, Illinois. His name is commemorated on a plaque located in Bonifacio, France but his surname is inscribed as Elliot.
