Richard W. Davis entered the military service in Pennsylvania. He served in the 563rd Bomber Squadron, 388th Bomber Group, Heavy as a Second Lieutenant and Pilot of an aircraft during World War II. Lt. Davis in aircraft 42-3548 "Little Willie", was hit by flak at the Northern defenses of the Rhur Valley. He left the formation with the engines smoking but under control. Shortly afterwards, the crew bailed out and the plane blew-up. The enlisted men were in Stalag I, Barth, Germany. Due to cloud coverage in the target area, Brunswick was bombed by PFF methods, on the flares of the PFF aircraft of the lead groups in the wing. Bombs were away at 1040 hours from 20,000 feet. 2Lt Davis is now buried in the Ardennes American Cemetery, Neupré, Belgium. He was one of the many brave Americans of the 388th Bomber Group who lost their lives in aerial operations against the German forces from June 1943 - August 1945.
