Son of Simeon L. and Clara (Pratt) Rheno; was born in Vineyard Haven, Mass., on Feb. 26, 1895. He was educated in the public schools of Vineyard Haven. In the latter part of 1916, he abandoned the automobile business in which he was engaged in New York City, sailed for France, and enlisted in the Foreign Legion, in Paris, on Dec. 19, 1916. In Jan., 1917, he applied for transfer to the Aviation Service, and in Feb. started his training at the ecole d' Aviation Militaire at Buc, near Versailles, continuing at Pau and at Avord. On May 10, 1917, he received the French Military License. After perfection air work in the one-man combat machine known as the Fighting Chasse, the fastest of fighting machines in use at the front, he was ordered to the war zone on July 1, 1917. He was sent to Verdun on July 16 to join fighting. Squadron N 80 of the Groupe de Combat. He proved himself a confident and excellent aviator with at least 10 enemy kills. On October 17, 1917, he was granted a three week leave to go to America, and while at home he was asked to transfer to the United States air service. For some reason the transfer did not take place, and after waiting nearly a year for his commission, he returned to France in October 1918, hoping to be re-assigned to duty in French aviation. He became ill with pneumonia a few days after arrival in Paris. He died at the American Hospital at Neuilly-sur-Seine, on Oct. 10, 1918, of pneumonia, and was buried under Lafayette Escadrille Memorial Marnes-la-Coquette, Departement des Hauts-de-Seine, Īle-de-France, France.
