He served three months during the terrific fighting at Verdun and three months in the battles at Champagne. Returning to America just after the United States had declared war, he enlisted in the United States naval aviation corps and was one of the first twenty to begin training at Squantum in May 1917. In June he secured his discharge and returned to France, where he joined the Lafayette Flying Corps, June 18, 1917. After training at various schools he went to the front in the winter. He was officially accredited with 122 hours over the German lines. In December, 1918, he returned to the United States on leave. He never went back to France, securing his discharge from the French Army through French authorities in this country. On the trip home he was taken ill with pneumonia and never fully recovered his health. He died of tuberculosis at Saranac Lake, N.Y., Jan. 6, 1921.
