Corporal John Vaughan was from New Castle Delaware. On March 3, 1945 he was a crewmember (Gunner) on B-17G (44-88325) of the 1379th Base Unit, 15th Air Force ferrying their aircraft from Iceland to Wales when the plane crashed in bad weather on the Scottish peak of Beinn Edra on the Trotternish Ridge on the isle of Skye near the town of Staffin. The plane was destined of the base Gioa del Colle for operations in Italy with the 15th Air Force. All nine members of the crew perished. The town of Staffin remembers the crew with a plaque on the town war memorial and with a plaque at the crash site. He is buried in the Jefferson Barracks National Cemetery (Section 82, Site 229) in Missouri with fellow crewmates: Aldrich, Fahselt, and Wilkinson.
