Comments:

Bernard Howard Lord, Jr. was born in 1923 in Cook County, Minnesota. He was a former student at Washburn high school and entered service in September, 1942. He went overseas in July, 1944. His brother, Pfc Donald Lord was stationed in Germany. He served in the 563rd Bomber Squadron, 388th Bomber Group, Heavy, as a First Lieutenant and Pilot of #42-102953 "Sky Anne" aircraft during World War II.

Bernard Lord was on his 10th mission when killed over Germany. After bombs away and while doing evasive action, Lt. Heimendinger's aircraft hit and cut Lt. Lord's aircraft into just behind the ball turret. Lt. Lord's aircraft went into a spin. Before the ball-gunner could bail-out the plane was spinning in a flat nose down position. During this spin, the wings came off and the ball-gunner passed out. This part of the plane crashed upside-down in a spoil area of a factory in the Merseburg area. 1Lt Lord is now buried in the Netherlands American Cemetery, Margraten, Netherlands. He was one of the many brave Americans of the 388th Bomber Group who lost their lives in aerial operations against the German forces from June 1943 - August 1945.
