Comments:

Warren Hampton McClure was born on April 23, 1920, in Birmingham, Alabama. He was the son of William Hampton and Mary Bryan McClure. He enlisted in the Army Air Force and was trained as an aerial gunner. After receiving combat crew training in the U.S., his crew was sent to England as a replacement bomber crew. They were assigned to the 563rd Bomb Squadron of the 388th Bomb Group.

They flew their first mission, a bombing raid on Norway, on July 24, 1943, but had to abort because of weather conditions. On July 25, 1943, they were scheduled to fly as part of a raid on Wustrow, Germany. When the formation arrived, the target was obscured by clouds. The lead crew then elected to attack a target of opportunity - the Kerik West airfield. This was bombed successfully. Then, on the return trip to England, the formation was attacked by enemy fighters, and McClure's aircraft was shot down and crashed into the North Sea. On November 9, 1943, the body of the pilot washed ashore between Esbjerg and Thyboron. He was buried in the Lemvig Cemetery with full military honors by German troops.

All ten crew members were killed, and with the exception of two who were recovered, are memorialized on the Tablets of the Missing in the Netherlands American Cemetery at Margraten, Holland. Technical Sergeant McClure was one of the many brave Americans of the 388th Bomber Group who lost their lives in aerial operations against the German forces from June 1943 - August 1945.
