Constantine George "Gus" Scourbys was born in Brooklyn, Kings County, New York on the 21st of July 1924 as the son of George W. and Elsie Scourbys. He had one brother, William. Before he enlisted for the United States Army Air Force on the 15th of December 1942 he attended college for one year.

Sergeant Constantine G. Scourbys was a Right Waist Gunner on the B-17G "The Expectant Father" of the 563rd Bomb Squadron, 388th Bomb Group (Heavy),.

The crew of the B-17G "The Expectant Father" departed on the 11th of April 1944 to Pozen - it was their first mission. The aircraft was brand new and was all silver, the only one in the 563rd Bomb Squadron that day.

They were the #3 position in the lead element, lead squadron 45th Combat Group. Cloud cover was over the primary target so the flight went to Rostock, their secondary target. After the crew had dropped the bombs their aircraft was attacked by a line abreast formation of four FW190's. As a result of this attack the radio department exploded and caught fire, which spread quickly to consume everything to the rear of the flight deck, and some of the crew bailed out, the others stayed on the plane until it crashed on the Baltic coast near a small German town.

The men who bailed out drowned in the Baltic Sea. One of these men was Constantine G. Scourbys. His body was never found. His name is commemorated on the Tablets of the Missing, Netherlands American Cemetery, Margraten, Netherlands. He was one of the many brave Americans of the 388th Bomber Group who lost their lives in aerial operations against the German forces from June 1943 - August 1945.
