Herbert C. Shute was born in 1917 in South Dakota. He attended high school for 4 years and was an electrician. He joined the Air Corps of the Regular Army at Fort McArthur, San Pedro, California on 23 August 1941. Herbert served in the 561st Bomber Squadron, 388th Bomber Group (Heavy), as a Co-Pilot of #44-6611 aircraft during World War II. A member of the Stefko crew, he was killed when their plane crashed on May 19, 1945. The plane took part in Operation 'Revival': the repatriation of POW's out of Russian occupied zones. The exact facts of the crash aren't known. 2Lt Shute is now buried in the Netherlands American Cemetery, Margraten, Netherlands. He was one of the many brave Americans of the 388th Bomber Group who lost their lives in aerial operations against the German forces from June 1943 - August 1945.
