Comments:

Paul Edward Warren was born in Carthage, North Carolina on August 31, 1920. He was the son of James L. and Martha Jane Nall Warren. He was trained as an aerial gunner and was assigned to a B-17 combat crew. This crew was assigned to the 563rd Bomb Squadron of the 388th Bomb Squadron operating from Knettishall, England. The crew, headed by Lt Bobbitt, flew on 4 combat missions beginning on July 17, including the 24th, 25th, and terminating on 26, 1943. The last mission was to raid the German war facilities at Hannover, Germany.

The bomb run was made successfully, but as the formation made the turn off target, it was engaged by a number of enemy fighters. In the fight that followed. six B-17s were shot down, including the one piloted by Lt. Bobbitt. Five of the crew managed to bail out before the aircraft crashed near Holtland, Germany. German records credit Oberleutnan Karl Becker, piloting a FW-190 from JG 1/3 with this victory. The five crewmen that bailed out were all captured by the Germans; the remaining five were killed (including Warren) in either the attack or crash. SSgt Warren's body was recovered and eventually returned to the U.S. for burial. He now lies in the Cool Springs Methodist Church Cemetery in Carthage, North Carolina. He was one of the many brave Americans of the 388th Bomber Group who lost their lives in aerial operations against the German forces from June 1943 - August 1945.
