George Catlett Marshall Jr. was born on December 31, 1880, in Uniontown, Pennsylvania. He was an American military officer and statesman who rose to the five-star rank of General of the Army. He graduated from the Virginia Military Institute in 1901 and was commissioned as a U.S. Army infantry officer in 1902. He served in the Philippines and later became an important operations planner during World War I, contributing to major American operations including the Meuse-Argonne Offensive.

Marshall became Chief of Staff of the U.S. Army in 1939, a position he held throughout World War II until 1945. In this role, he oversaw the enormous expansion and modernization of the U.S. Army as the United States prepared for and entered the war. He played a central role in organizing American military strategy and selecting senior commanders for important wartime positions, including Dwight D. Eisenhower. Under Marshall's leadership, the Army expanded from a relatively small peacetime force into a military of millions of soldiers, and he was eventually promoted to the five-star rank of General of the Army.

Following World War II, Marshall continued his public service as a special U.S. envoy to China and later as Secretary of State from 1947 to 1949. As Secretary of State, he advocated a major American program to support the economic recovery of Europe after the devastation of the war. The initiative became known as the Marshall Plan and contributed to his receiving the Nobel Peace Prize in 1953, making him the only U.S. Army general to receive that honor. Marshall later served as chairman of the American Battle Monuments Commission, president of the American National Red Cross, and U.S. Secretary of Defense during the Korean War. After leaving government service, he retired to Virginia. He died on October 16, 1959, at the age of 78 and was buried with honors at Arlington National Cemetery.
