Byron Aster Wiberg, Jr. was born in 1920 in Georgia. He served in the 561st Bomber Squadron, 388th Bomber Group (Heavy), as a Technical Sergeant and Radio Operator of #42-37867 "Berlin Ambassador" aircraft during World War II. A member of the Hoehn crew, their plane crashed on January 14, 1944. It was hit hard by enemy fire. The no. 2 and no. 3 engine were hit and had to be feathered. On two engines, the Berlin Express struggled forwards in the direction of the Dutch border. The plane lost more and more altitude and Lt Hoehn could not keep the plane in the air. Four crewmen managed to leave the plane before it crashed in the vicinity of Zwolle, killing the remaining 6 crewmen, including pilot Lt. Hoehn. The plain crashed at 11 January 1944. Sgt Wiberg died as POW at camp 'Kreigs Lazaret', Apeldoorn, the Netherlands. He is now buried in the Netherlands American Cemetery, Margraten, Netherlands. He was one of the many brave Americans of the 388th Bomber Group who lost their lives in aerial operations against the German forces from June 1943 - August 1945.
