Robert W. Young was bin 1923 and raised in Cleveland, Ohio, Robert Young enlisted in 1943 and was assigned to the 560th Squadron ground crew.

On May 20, 1944, Pfc. Young was killed in a freak ground accident. Aircraft #42-97352, piloted by 2nd Lt. August Schneider, had aborted from that morning's mission to Brussels and returned to base with a failed #1 engine and the entire electrical and hydraulic system out. Flying at high speed in low visibility, Schneider was making his third landing attempt on the main runway when the #1 engine caught fire, forcing him to attempt an abrupt landing on one of the airfield's two shorter runways. The pilot overshot the runway and the plane careened across the grass, first plowing throw a line tent and then colliding with the Nissan hut with Pfc Young inside. The plane then caught fire and its bomb load exploded. It was speculated that Pfc. Young was knocked unconscious in the collision and was therefore unable to escape the hut before the explosion occurred. In addition to R. W. Young, two other men were killed at this time: D. G. Price and A. A. Gregory.

Pfc Young is now buried in the Knollwood Cemetery, Mayfield Heights, Cuyahoga County, Ohio, USA. He was one of the many brave Americans of the 388th Bomber Group who lost their lives in aerial operations against the German forces from June 1943 - August 1945.
