Gilbert O. Backman was born in 1921. He enlisted in the Army on February 23, 1941 in Waterbury, Connecticut. Gilbert was a volunteer with ties to Greece that assisted the OSS Greek Operational group in 1944 as they aided the Greek armed resistance in their fight against the occupying and then withdrawing German Army.
