When Gust Kitakis was born on September 16, 1923, in Morgantown, West Virginia, his father, Frank, was 29 and his mother, Esther, was 24. He had three siblings. He enlisted in the Army on February 24, 1943. Gust was one of the Greek-American volunteers who served in Company C, 2671 Special Reconnaissance Battalion, an OSS operational group. This "Greek Battalion" aided the Greek armed resistance in 1944 in their fight against the occupying and then withdrawing German Army. He died on December 4, 2001 at the age of 78 and is now buried in the Crescent Hills Cemetery, Waterford, Oakland County, Michigan, USA.
