William Grant Shankles was born on September 17, 1925. He was the son of Joseph Grant Shankles and Effie M. Lyons Shankles. Willis served in the 503rd Parachute Infantry Regiment as a Private First Class during World War II. He died on February 18, 1945 at the age of 19, during the battle for the recapture of Corregidor, Philippines against the defending Japanese garrison on the island and is now buried in the Lynnhurst Cemetery, Knoxville, Knox County, Tennessee, USA.
