Leona Gastinger Sutphin was born on January 31, 1916. She was married to Herman Theron Sutphin. Leona attended St. Margaret's School of Nursing in Montgomery, Alabama and entered the Army Nurse Corp in 1941 and was on duty at the time of the Japanese attack on Pearl Harbor and subsequently, the Phillipines. She served with Field Hospital II on Bataan and at the fall of the peninsula was evazciated to Corregidor on April 8, 1941. She was further evacuated by submarine from Corregidor to Australia and eventually returned to the U.S. She served on recruiting for the Army Nurse Corps during the remainder of the war and was medically retired as a Captain. Leona died on January 7, 1997 on their 50th Wedding Anniversary and is now buried in the Prattville Memorial Gardens, Prattville, Autauga County, Alabama, USA.
