Kaoru Atarashi Moto was born on April 25, 1917 in Makawao, Hawaii. He served as a Private First Class in C Company, 100th Infantry Battalion, 442 Infantry Regiment during World War II.

On July 7, 1944 while stationed as a forward scout at Castellina, Italy he attacked a machine-gun nest, took a prisoner, then captured a house used as an observation post. Even being wounded, he continued to defend the position from being retaken by the Germans. Later, he spotted another machine-gun nest and opened fire, wounding two Germans and capturing the others. In a White House ceremony June 21, 2000, he received his posthumous award along with 21 other Asian American Veterans.

PFC Moto died on August 26, 1992 at the age of 75 in his town and is now buried in the National Memorial Cemetery of the Pacific, Honolulu, Honolulu County, Hawaii, USA.
