Son of William Bancroft, of Toledo. He enlisted on 8 September 1939 in Detroit, Michigan. He served briefly on the cruiser USS Indianapolis, before transferring to the USS Peary in April 1940. Bancroft was a Fireman 1st Class. He was in Cavite Bay when the Peary was bombed, and endured three aerial bombardments on his way to Australia. He was unmarried when he died.
