Joseph F. Moloney was born on June 30, 1921. He served as the ball turret gunner on a B-17F named "Raunchy" which took off from Thorpe Abbotts to target an instrument and ball bearing factory at Stuttgart, Germany. His aircraft was attacked by fighters and was flown to Switzerland where it was ditched on Lake Constance at about 1030hrs approximately one and a quarter mile from shore. It floated for about four minutes and all the crew escaped except him as he had been killed in the fighter attack. On 5 Oct 1043 the Swiss raised the aircraft and recovered his body. He was interred in Bad Ragnaz cemetery and later removed to the community cemetery at Munsingen near Bern on 24 May 1944. His final resting place now is in the Epinal American Cemetery, Dinozé, France.
Moloney was the first US Servicemen to be be buried in the Munsingen Cemetery and the Adelboden Internee Camp was named in his honor.
