Charles R. Burgett was born on September 26, 1920 in New York. He resided in Niagara County, New York prior to the war. He enlisted in the Army Air Corps on August 1, 1942 in Buffalo, New York. He was noted, at the time of his enlistment, as being employed in warehousing and also as Divorced, with dependents. Charles served as a Staff Sergeant and Asst. Radio Operator on B-17F (#42-30126), 416th Bomber Squadron, 99th Bomber Group, U.S. Army Air Force during World War II.

Charles was "Killed In Action" when his B-17F was attacked and shot down by enemy aircraft fire over Switzerland. He was temporarily buried He was temporarily buried in what was then the American Cemetery in Münsingen, Switzerland. He is now buried in the Hillside Cemetery, Andover, Allegany County, New York, USA.
