Murray R. Phillips was born in 1921 in Illinois. He served in the 347th Bomber Squadron, 99th Bomber Group, Heavy as a Staff Sergeant/Right Waist Gunner on B-17 F-30-VE, Cantwell's crew during World War II. SSGT Phillips was killed in action on October 1, 1943, when their plane was forced down by enemy action on the Switzerland frontier. He was temporarily buried He was temporarily buried in what was then the American Cemetery in Münsingen, Switzerland. He is now buried in the Epinal American Cemetery, Dinozé, France.
